Dear AFCA Colleagues,
Now that I can walk again and climb stairs and my knee has healed sufficiently to host the meeting that had to be postponed from some weeks ago, you are welcome to come over and spend the day with fellow fan enthusiasts and peruse the limited pleases of my dwelling in Barnet, North London on Saturday 17th October. You can meet the lead typlexist on AFCA and helkp him with his limited collection of fans. It will likely be the largest show of Veritys fans yet seen (I should have about 16 of my fans on the day plus more from Peter Moulds that I hold for him) and someof the others if I can get them shipped from my other house in Suffolk in time. It sould be an opportunity for us to chill a little together and discuss the fans we have - of course feel free to bring your own fans and especialy your catalogues that you would like to share - I will have the document scanners up and running!!!! Copies of my catalogues wil be available on CD (and the new website - see seperate posting) and providing the weather holds up, there wil be a barbeque and refreshments available.
There are some spare beds available but Peter Moulds will be joining us for the day and another member and his partner have bagged the Aerobed so it is futon or lounge space for anuone else.
I have parking for four cars in my drive (unusual for London) and space on the road outside for many more.
One proviso. Because of the kind of work I do, I must know who will be visiting and turning up on the day could be disappointing so let me know you would like to visit first as this is my home as well as my office and that would only be courteous. If this works, we could hire a proper venue for the next meeting but as there are only a handful of AFCA members in the UK - this could kick things off.
Foodwise, it will be barbeque, buffet and beer/wine plus the usual refreshments and I suggest that we begin at say 10am to give me chance to take my partner to work (she is a Chinese Doctor) and Peter and I to get things ready.
Feel free to contact me via a PM for a map (given that someone reading AFCA then purloined my website, I have no inlcination to reveal where I live) The electrified fence and the guard dogs are really quite frindly but please do not feed the sharks that swim in the moat surrounding the house - it make them fat!) - for those curious regarding this remark, I work professionally in the field of IT security and my clients take their privacy rather seriously.
So, I will open the doors at 10am and stand back whilst the trickle of colleagues and fiends (sorry Typlexia again!) tramples over me to gain acces to what will likely be the largest collectionof Veritys Orbitals and Statics outside Peter Moulds secret emporium in Cairo.
Hope this gave you a giggle because I was very nearly killed on the motorway in a car crash this morning and am feeling very happy to be alive just now.

Just a reminder,
Please let me know that you will be coming to the meeting at my house early so I can organise the catering - I would hate you to turn up and find we had eaten all the food, drunk all the wine left you out of things so if you are contemplating coming over - let me know early as I have to fly to Paris and Berlin on work and won't have so much time to prepare and Ling needs to go to Chinatown to buy Chinese groceries for the evening meal for those of you staying late/sleeping over.

I am assembling all my Veritys and Peter Moulds will bring some down from his caches of fans held for him in the UK so I anticipate about 16 Veritys models to be on show with 10 or so orbitals to see - should I think be the first time ever that so many Veritys Orbitals will be in one place with five or six running and of course, photos will be taken and posted
Peter is also bring down some of his other fans so it could be a good photo opportunity for the AFCA magazine?
Pete is also organising some surprise fans for the meeting but that remains a well kept secret - (Pete - did you get the GYRO fans organised?) Shhhhhhhhhhh - don't tell everyone - they will all want to see one.
By the way there is a bottle of champagne to the member who creates a new collective noun for a group of Veritys fans (a Blade of Veritys) - of course - so simple when you think about it - has to be an "Orbit of Veritys" - Phew - I can keep the champagne - unless you know better we will keep that to crack open on the day

| What do you mean - lightning it(sic) from the living room could be interesting? A 25 foot spark could catch local interest. Just don't get into HERF guns.

Hiya - back from my travels an getting ready for the fan meeting in London on Saturday. Peter Moulds will be there from cairo and several of the other UK members are attending and some staying over to sample Chinese food prepared by my Chinese partner.
We anticipate about 20-30 fans arriving plus my stock so that should give us about 50 fans to play with and photos will be taken and uploaded - possibly the same evening if we are still standing up!

| Well, that would be one fantastic meet to go to! Do you think I could get a cheap plane ticket to London from New York during this holiday season? Not! Well, it looks as if I will have to be there in spirit only. Good luck Richard.

I'll be setting off from Wandsworth in about half an hour - should be with you around 10am.
I've got 11 fans in the car, including 3 static Veritys models.

| Please, everyone, take detailed close-up photos of all your Veritys fans and post them here. These fans will be such a pleasure to see and be a great learning tool for all of us here in the U.S. deprived of such masterpieces.

Happily a great dry day here in Barnet North of London. The first AFCA meet outside the continental US. I'm posting a first picture taken by Tony Gilbert (on the right of the picture - marvels of camera timers) in Richard Boothroyd's back garden (Richard is on the left of Tony). I'm in the middle and Tina and Will Drabble are on the left of the picture.
A fascinating collection of mostly British made fans with a few US fans, some rebadged for UK sales and the occasional German or Italian fans were there as well. Tony brought 11 fascinating early UK made fans from Bristol (about 110 miles Southwest) and Will and Tina came from Southampton (70 miles South) with 8 beautifully restored fans.
I contributed some 5 or 6 fans the rest being from Richard's growing collection. There were a fascinating variety of Veritys particularly. We will post more pictures as soon as we have cropped and cleaned them (thank you Tony).
Hopefully there will be more UK regional fan meets in the not too distant future.

Oh how I wish I could have come to your Fan Meet! Please post many pictures; I really look forward to seeing them. Hope that all went well and all participants had a wonderful time. I would have much enjoyed Chinese food prepared by a lady who genuinely knows how to prepare Chinese food. I think I'm going to have to save to come to your next Fan Meet. I've always wanted to visit England.

Wow! What a collection. Looking forward to more photos!
And like michael said, its nice to personalise things a bit and put a face to the names of people who otherwise are only known via an avatar and fan preferences. (Of course, US folk probably know one another better as they meet more often)

| Well, the meeting started at about noon and went through to 5am, when Peter Moulds left for the airport back to Cairo. Everyone seemed to have a nice time despite my having to visit hospitals etc for a slight problem of a friend being hurt and continued through the night - certainly something I will host again, probably early nest year. Thanks to Peter for flying in from Cairo and thanks also all the others who attended, especially Tony Gilbert for taking all the photos - now it is 05:42 and time for bed. Special thanks to my partner, Ling who created a Chinese Feast and was an unsung hero coping with her day job today (Doctor) plus cooking for us all tonight.

To record the occasion we took a quick picture of each fan on the tables. I've identified them as much as I can remember, but I'm sure my colleagues will correct me if I've got any wrong.

Many thanks.....Well done! I really appreciate the efforts of your posts and enjoyed visual catalogue of your fans from your gathering.
I'm glad you posted the pics of the Ediswan fans as I was stumped on what they were.
It's great to put faces to your names too.
One day I'd love to do something like that here if I could find enough like minded folk who collect fans.
Cheers Jim

| The "Time Machine " thingy is a Whimshurst machine that generates one inch sparks by winding the handle- this one was built by Will Drabble and provided interesting fun at 3am for those staying overnight and keeping Peter Moulds awake as he waited for his flight - it was even more interesting when it shorted onto Will's hand to earth and lit his eyes up!!!!!

Well done ladies and gentlemen. I enjoyed your photos of many fans we rarely see here in the US.
I noticed the nicely restored 1902 GEC fan that's appears to be missing some parts? Switch?? Switch knob is available from member Mike Petree or Ron Jeter. Perfect rerproductions. Is the coil missing inside the motor? New ones are available from Sartron here in the US if you do need one. PM me and I'll get you the contact info.Last edited on Mon Oct 19th, 2009 09:45 pm by Steve Stephens

I just wanted to thank those who attended the meeting yesterday and thank them personally for taking the time and effort to make things work so well.
Tony Gilbert for his professional skills in photographing all the fans and the group shots as well as his expertise with explaining some of the missing gaps on Veritys fans and staying so late because he loved LIng's chinese food.
Will and Tina for their help and enthusiasm and entertaining us all night as enjoyed Bacardi and cola and staying with Ling and me today as we explored parts of London seldem seen! A shame that you have just phones me that you are stuck on the motorway with two flat tyres (something wrong with he road and 20 cars also broke doen with flats).
Peter Moulds for travelling from Cairo and helping to sort out my house before anyone else arrived.
Special thanks to my partner Ling Chen for cooking and enduring things and valliantly staying up until 2:30am last night to entertain the assembled throng. Finally to Jemima who began work as my cleaner on Friday and bravely worked her heart out to clean my large house ready for everyone to untidy again.
I enjoyed the meeting and we will have another one in the New Year. In the meantime, after dicsussions I intend to throw a series of workshops for members to attend free on a range of associated topics. Gear cutting was a hot favourite so we will make that likely the first one as I have the specialised machines to make these things.
For those intersted, I will be bringing both replacement cable in brown and gold back from Cairo together with supplies of grommets for Marelli and veritys. Pete needs to cover his costs and I will only add postage.
Finally Pete for deciding to go slightly mad and buy another sports car to park in my drive - We will enjoy driving it whilst you are in Egypt driving its' twin!!
So there will be a gearcutting workshop at my place sometime before Christmas.

Now I finally got to see what a Veritys double lever looks like but I still cant figure out how it works. Hope you send some pictures to Jim Daggs for the magazine. Nick

Really awesome and i certainly wish i could have been there to meet in person the UK contingency...... kinda funny how different people look from the mental pictures in my head of what i must have thought everyone looked like....and i havent even a clue where or how my 'visions' came from but i am now very perplexed....i think it will be easier to keep my original pictures intact and pretend i never saw these....
by the way, i will bet the great ediswan pictured was in fact
made by Bergmann.......
thanks again for sharing the photos.
