I had this posted in Post-1950, and was informed it needed to be over here:(.

Sorry about that, I am not great at this type of thing.

I'll start with pictures, and a link to the original thread.

And from my original post:

Should I restore the fan (sand it down and re varnish it), or leave it alone?

What is the fan worth? Is it worth more original and peeling, or re finished?

How should I store it?

I am remodeling a storefront back to it's original art deco design and this fan seems to fit the bill, though it was built in the wrong era. Would daily use be a big no-no?

My other questions were:
What year was the fan made?

Can I obtain a decal to replace the original if I decide to restore the fan?

Thank you in advance for your help,
Brad

By all means if you want to refinish it go ahead. It's not really going to hurt it.Its from the post WWII era.The late 1940s early 50s.There isn't a lot of info on Mathes. If you want to run it daily make sure the cord is good and the motor is oiled. These old fans were built to last.I have mine displayed in the frontroom. They look like a piece of furniture. As far as value it is hard to say cause fan prices are all over the place. There is a club member who does repro decals for fans.hope that helps.

Why is there a difference in blades?

FWIW I like my large almost over sized blades better;)

Very nice example, and thanks for the reply.

I would restore the finish. In my opinion it will be worth more, although prices/values are all over the place.

I like really the turbine look of the blades on Michaels fan.

Brad, I just got through restoring one just like yours.  The picture is in the post 50 section under Mathes Cooler.  I think my fan was manufactured around 1954.  I would definitely restore your fan but be careful with the veneer.

These are well worth the work to restore/re-finish. I have two of them. The first was kicking around underfoot at Raymond Lowry's shop while I was there to pick up another fan. So it came home with me too! The second one I found at our local Unique thrift store and purchased it for a whopping $9.42. Both of these run perfectly and will run continuously day and nite. One of my kitties, Enkil, has taken over Raymond's fan and loves to relax on it when it is running.
BTW, I am amazed at how many styles of wooden Mathes Cooler fans are out there! No two seem to be the same!

I googled "Mathes Cooler" and looked through pictures until I saw one and it was yours with a link to here :).

My wife was probably getting worried that I did not have enough things to be addicted to, in the past few days I have surfed the pictures on here looking for antique desk fans for the shop. She's gonna kill me lol.

Mike, your Unique Thrift Store fan is identical to mine! Nice! I am surmising that these get turned in because they are so amazingly heavy. I think that these Mathes fans are great and very collectible.
