I know many of don't buy on ebay, but some do, and others just window shop...
However if you've been on you have no doubt seen the new fans being sold under the category Collectibles/Kitchen&Home/Electric Fans... While it is arguable that they might be collectible to someone, chances are slim and ebay does have a policy to police incorrect placement. I talked with a rep today and he suggested that I email ebay at suggest@ebay.com to report violations and make suggestions.
Perhaps they need an antique electric fan category... If you are annoyed by this barrage of brand new fans then email them...

I've seen the new fans. Collectible? To some maybe, but not in my opinion. I agree, they clutter up the category with these cheap fans. I'll send an email today. I don't think ebay will respond unless there is a lot of demand, lets all send an email and see if we can clean up the mess. Thanks Larry.

I seriously doubt that eBay will do anything, they're motivated ONLY by the all mighty dollar. If it gets in the way of them making a buck, then and only then will they do anything.

| Ron, I tend to agree with you. I've been doing ebay since 1998, and its gotten worse with every passing year.

I quit selling on there about a year ago because of the nickel and dime fees. Then they started the pay pal only so they could increase there fees even more.
As far as complaining to them I have never had any sucess with them, it all comes down to if they are lining there pockets they don't give a crap.
So here's is my solution. I am going to Geoffs next week, going to work on some fans, have a good time and eat some chilli. @. (DRINK BEER ALSO).

| Okay, let me attempt to steer this back in the right direction... This was not a post to get opinions of ebay. While I can say I haven't bought anything from ebay in a while, I won't say never because something might just happen along that I really want. I understand your views and totally empathize. However even if you just like to look at the fans on there for entertainment send them an email so you don't have to parse through so much garbage. That was the purpose of the post. Thanks for understanding.

I agree, we went a little off subject. So I am starting a new thread.

I sent an email to ebay, I'm sure they'll bend over backwards to accommodate my request.
(The comment above is a jab at ebay, and is NOT directed at Larry for attempting to make this positive change)

Great idea, Larry. Here is a copy of the letter I wrote to eBay:
Hi,
I am both a buyer and seller on eBay. I am interested in old electric fans. However, over the years there have been more and more “sellers” hawking brand new (junk) fans in this category.
My suggestion here would be to add a category: “Antique electric fan” ←need to have “electric” to avoid old parchment folding hand-fans showing up in the search engine. Please have these sellers of new fans post under a different category.
Thanks,
Fred

| Fred, thats very similar to what I said in my email to ebay. This morning I got an automated reply. I really hope this works, but I wont hold my breath.

| I still sell on Ebay, but only because I have too much stuff and Ebay is a larger crowd of buyers. But as for fans, I strongly advise you to buy from members. Go to a Regional Meet. Try the fan. Look it over. Ask questions. Then pay for it, and take it home. No shipping and packing costs. No damage from poor packing and handling. No problems with not getting what you thought you were. And the prices are much better. In addition, you may go to a meet to buy a certain fan. You get there, and find one you never saw before, and decide on both, or the newer one.

Steve, I have limited my ebay buying to certain trusted sellers. As for buying at regional meets, that very good advise. Now, if there were one held somewhere in the northeast I'd be there for sure!!!!

| Ralph, why not host a Regional. The AFCA will send mailing labels. Just pick a date, a place, and have one. We hosted many in Bedford when we lived there. We had pot lucks. I still drool over Jerry Henry's wife's desserts. Oh man.

Ralph,
I'm less than 2 hours from you in extreme southern NH and have entertained the idea of a NE regional myself. If it is something that you may be interested in, maybe we can work something out.
