I am new to this forum and would like to identify an old GEC electric fan I have and would appreciate any information from other forum members.
The fan is a 16" sweep and has the following description:
B.S. 380 - 1930 and M/C 14668F 146.
It also has the number PM59170/2 inscribed underneath the base.

Brian, where are you and the fan located?
A photo or more will probably be necessary for a good identification. I know that I have not a clue as to what you have. Can you post some photos? If you have a host for your photos you can put many in one post; otherwise one per post and just reply to your own post for each new photo. Welcome!

Unfortunately the larger pictures are available only to members. However, I see that member Peter Moulds is the owner of those fans or the provider of the photos. He might be able to identify your fan if you contact him. To me your fan looks newer than the ones in the gallery, maybe c.1950.

Is this really a GEC fan? The name plate says GSC and I thought that was an Asian copy.

Dave, I think our eyes are getting to much patina on the lens. Try a magnifier like I did and I think you'll see the badge is similar to-Attached Image (viewed 115 times):

I can confirm that your fan is the same as the GEC 16" oscillator as shown in the Gallery section. From the logo it says to me that the silver colour paint on yours is original.
Thanks Tony for the catalogue image; until now I didn't know that the fan was sold as late as 1951. It is a long lived model because they were being sold pre-war in the 30s.
The cages are always steel and I suspect the later fans had steel blades either painted or brass plated? Paint in your case??
The earlier fans of this model had brass blades which were copper plated and then the copper was darkened using liver of sulphur to give an antique effect, a kind of false patina?which was popular apparently.
To show the copper underneath, the blade finisher would streak two or three greasy finger streaks across the front of each blade and the sulphur would not darken this place.
Nice fan apparently in good condition. Congratulations.

Thanks everyone for your interest and comments. I have had the fan for about 40 years and sadly during those years done a bit of patch up painting of the blades and base where it had surface rust, but it is still in good working order. Brian DJ
