Are all stamped steel fans a pain to work on or just westinghouse? I found a silver swan on ebay that I've been debating on bidding on but its stamped steel

Adam, my understanding is that Silver Swans present their own problems but they are good fans. Wait till you hear from others about Silver Swan repair/restoration problems.
I think the older cast iron fans are a bit simpler than stamped steel fans. I also have not heard of problems associated with R&M stamped steel brass blade fans but maybe that's because they aren't quite as common as the Westy stamped steel ones.
I have little experience in working on fans as I try to find good original examples that don't need much work plus I haven't gotten around to changing the headwires on my many fans where that really should be done.

Its kinda sad, but the can-motor Westinghouse fans were the "start" of the modern throw-away fans...if you had motor problems you were just about out of luck. Although some AFCA guyz here have come up with waze to remove the stator from a can motor, it isn't easy and you often wind up with motor end bell bearing races that no longer line up when the motor is re-assembled. I actually turned down (for Twenty bucks, should have gotten it) a Westy can motor oscillator with brass 6-wing blade and steel cage at our big flea market. The headwire was burned through, right where it went into the motor. The seller wanted $100.00 until I pointed out the burned leads, which when I touched them came loose and fell away. He went down to $50.00 then $20.00, but because it was stamped steel, I knew that the chances of re-wiring it were slim, so I passed.

All stamped steel fans are difficult to work on if the motor needs to be removed. I would recommed getting an Emerson 29646. There are tons of them out there and parts are easy to find. A Silver Swan can be very hard to restore and I would not recommend it. I am not recommending you buy this one because I cannot be responsible for anything bought on E-Bay but this one looks like it needs a little work and could be a nice fan.

Adam, if your in Duluth and you have a car...you have fan purchase opportunity. Steve's right about where you need to start developing your restoration skills. Starting on a stamp steel Westy is like performing your first Heart transplant before you went to medical school:) Think about how much time you have spent on this forum with that Westy?
I bought this Emerson about an hour away from home. I didn't have to paint it, and Emerson's are much easier to restore. I actually started my purchasing and restoration for most part on dime store fans.Attached Image (viewed 94 times):

Starting with dime store fans is a great idea, but if you have a fantasy about removing the motors from these you could be returning to a vicious circle.
