| My daily runner is my GE AOU Loop Handle, but in the summer i am going to use my GE industrial pedestal fan. This GE AOU runs like a champ and very smoothly and quietly for being a fan that i got at an antique shop for $23. Attached Image (viewed 2838 times):

| 1900, 02, and 04 GE pancakes. Possibly the best fans ever made. Also 8" R&M 1801 BB/BC- quiet, 3-speed. Emerson 19644. 3-speed and pretty quiet also. I don't need much breeze for cooling as the climate here north of San Francisco is usually moderate to cool and dry so these are not "daily runners" but ready to go when I need them- the '00 cake is running now to get some of the wood heat from the kitchen to the rest of the house. Only a week or so of 100+ but dry temperatures when the fans do come in handy for cooling (me).

My favorite daily runner is an Emerson 77646, and a 71666 French Grey that I use in my bedroom. Also have an Emerson Jr. 8" oscillator with the screw-on blade that cools us pretty much daily too if we need to stir the air just a little bit. In our cathedral ceiling living room we have a Hunter Tuerk 1896 Beehive with a long down rod. This fan has a copper flash finish done by John Andrews of Texas ceiling fans.

There are only two running right now but once we get into hot, humid summer, there will be at least four running at once. 
Right now there's a 16" GE in the living room and a 12" Power Aire in the kitchen. Both run good and strong. Not the quietest things in the world but it doesn't really matter when it's 85 degrees indoors.

I switch between my 77646-AA (first style overlapping blade) and 77646-SU (gray 1960's version) depending on mood. The earlier blade design isnt as silent as the later ones, but it makes a nice gentle whir that is nice to go to sleep to. My 29646 gets quite a bit of use too.
As far as window fans, its a Lakewood P-23 or a reversible 2-speed Emerson box fan (cant remember the model, but its got a capacitor run motor thats very efficient)

Well, there's my Emerson 77646 AS table fan which my father & I restored. It got new paint and wiring. This fan runs in our den / TV room.
There's also the 12" Signal Cool Spot which handles the dining room. It's the fan on the left.
And the Knapp Monarch Jack Frost pedestal which resides in our kitchen / dining room. I actually will be bringing this fan down to re-wire and repair the oscillator. An Emerson 77646 AM Ped will take its place later this month.

| It's getting to be that time of year here in Georgia when we bring out the table fans to use on those hot summer days. I use a Emerson 79646 in my home office, my wife uses a Diehl 12512 (12') that has been fitted with a 6 wing brass blade and cage for her bath room and we use a Robins & Myers 5304 (16") in the workout room. These fans are pretty much daily runners and then there are various ceiling fans throughout the house that we use. The ceiling fans are reproductions, three look like old Emerson fernleaf's but with 6 blades and lights. I hesitate to use a 95+year old fan as a daily runner, I would hate to see one burn up and they are not as quiet as the ones we are currently using.

In our house we've got ceiling fans that are used in the downstairs area, as a matter of fact one of the said fans is on right now, and yes it's a hunter and there's one in the hall too.
in my bedroom, I've used a silver swan but might switch it around.

We switch back & forth between about 10 different fans, but the 16" 6 wing GE AOU runs all night in the bedroom window this time of year. It has that particular sound to put you right to sleep! The den has either the 6 wing Hawthorne tank, 27668 Emerson, or the GE vorty pedestal. The vorty pedestal probably sees the most use since SWMBO replaced the 77646 pedestal with it. Any of you who have been to my workshop know there is a wall lined with daily runners out there.
BTW Myles, my office has a 16" Arctic Aire just like the one in your picture. It runs from 6:30 AM - 4:00 PM five days a week year round since my office is inside a boiler room.

| My living room is adequately supplied during the day by an Emerson 77648-AS (although, I am test driving a late 40s 16" Vorty pedestal) and I am lulled at night by an early Emerson 29646. I run an 8" Emerson Jr. oscillator in my office.

yeah i rotate between fans, every summer i use 2 or 3 fans in one room and that would be my room because its the only room in the house without a stupid A/C.

| In my basement, i usually rotate fans about every 1 to 2 months. In my bedroom, the primary runners are the GE hassock fan, a couple window fans, and a 16 inch 6 blade Westinghouse that practically starts a tornado in my room even on low speed.

I use a 77646-AS (gloss black) in my bedroom that has been running constantly for 8+ years now and a 70's Hunter adaptaire on low. Both run constantly.
Also a 36" Emerson Roundnose ceiling fan in the kitchen on a varispeed cut down to about medium (BEST ceiling fan I've ever had, no hum, nothing but wind noise just too powerful and concentrated to even run on standard factory low). I think these fans were made to put out almost as much air as the full size fans just at a higher speed and a deeper blade pitch.
My mother uses a 77648 pedestal I redid in bronze thats been on since 2000 or so and a 77648 in original bronze as a bedside fan in addition to a restored 1930's adaptaire. We're from the South and we both like it cooool at night so all these fans run 95% of the year.

I use this little limit every other day, it runs really smooth despite it's "I should be sleeping in a box on the street" paintjob . I have a couple of other limits but this is the only one i've seen with the factory two tone blades

I run this fan 24/7 for 6 months solid at a time. At which point I stop it, and change out the oil. Then I turn it back on and run it for another 6 months.

Dear Erik,
I have an Emerson 2-speed reversable fan that is capacitor ran as well which i pulled out of a potato house with the knobs broken off flush from the case. In my infinite knowledge, I took the switch apart and found little cotacts dancing on the floor and to top it off in frustration I pulled the wires off of the switch without looking at the pattern in which they were hooked up. I was wondering if you could please tell me or draw up a diagram of how those wires went. im not worried about how the contacts went in the switch, I can figure that out, i'm just not sure of how the wires went in. here in texas i run a hunter original at low in the day and medium at night
but in arkansas i use either a emerson al or a as fan
both of the emerson fans are great runners
and my hunter original is as silent as can be

| I use my older fans sporadically, but the one I really use daily when it's hot is a medium-sized box fan (from the '70s I'd guess) that I found on the curb. It's a "Mistral High Velocity Gyro Aire". The front grille is a round breeze spreader with slanted louvers that slowly rotates and fills every corner of the room with the most pleasant breeze, even on a low speed. If you want it to blow in just one direction, you can turn a knob on the front to disengage the spreader. It has an infinite speed control and is extremely quiet. I love to look at my old fans, but I really enjoy this one! And though it's not much of a looker, it's actually kind of soothingly hypnotic to watch it in action. OMG! After I wrote my post, I went looking on the 'net for info about my "favorite" fan. I found a number of hits (mostly from Australia) about this exact model, Mistral Gyro Aire GA-1670, having a tendency to burst into flames without warning! One site said they were known to have caused 106 house fires in Australia--some fatal. I left mine running all night last night, right next to my bed! Apparently there was a recall long ago and people were urged to smash them, lest they be found and reused by somebody else if discarded. Like that would ever happen.  I'm thinking the Fan Forum may have just saved my life. I guess it's time to look through my collection and choose a new daily runner! Here's some of the "chilling" info I found, which anyone else who's harboring one of these death fans might want to read:

7. A particularly notorious risk that has caused several deaths is a product known as the "Gyro Aire" fan which was manufactured by Mistral. Most known problems are associated with 1970's models but there are doubts about any pre-1990 products of this nature since fires have been reported in post-1979 models which supposedly used fire retardent plastic. The now out of business manufacturer (Mistral exists today in name only with the name having been purchased by another manufacturer) was involved in a well documented cover up so this is not surprising. Models GA16-70 and GA12-10 are particularly well known (though not the only) fire starters with some not even making it off the production line without catching fire. This is a cooling fan for use in summer and is housed in a square plastic box, beige in colour with (in most models) a darker coloured grille on the front that rotates slowly to direct air around the room. At the top right hand corner on the top of the unit is either a push button or slider control to adjust the speed.
There are two problems with these fans. Firstly, the components in the controls are electrically under-rated. They WILL fail in due course and that failure will in most cases produce sufficient heat to ignite the plastic. This can occur whether the unit is on or switched off (since the slider control never fully disconnects power). The second problem is that the plastic contains NO fire retardent and burns much like kerosene with huge flames largely destroying the whole unit in about 4 minutes and thick black smoke. These fans are known to have casued several hundred house fires (mostly in Australia) and at there have been fatalities and numerous near-misses as many of the fires started at night when the electrical voltage tends to be slightly higher (the explanation for which is quite technical but if anyone really wants to know then I'll explain... ). This issue received national media attention in the early 90's but no doubt plenty of these fans are still out there (I've seen quite a few). It is recommended that they be physically destroyed (by smashing it) to prevent salvage and reuse by persons unaware of the risk.
From the late 1970's to 1990 these fans were known to be causing fires at the rate of one every few weeks. At least 3 such fires stared in the Mistral factory itself and the company showroom in Singapore was also destroyed by one of these fans catching fire. By 1984 the company was receiving reports of fires at the rate of more than one every three weeks (and nobody knows how many non-reported fires occurred).
Similar non-Mistral brand products are not affected and the recent models ought to be safe. I emphasise that these are cooling fans and that there is no technical fix due to the problem with the plastic from which almost the whole unit is made. Over 300,000 of these highly flammable fans were made so there's a chance that someone here on ASF has one. There are also doubts about the safety of other Mistral products, particularly those made of plastic, from that era given the well documented lack of concern about safety by the company.

Apart from a POS galaxy box fan running in my bedroom window (really looking for a NICE replacement metal window fan instead)
my biggest daily runner and most important is what I have in my office window at home. which is my Fasco box fan. this keeps me and my computers cool so i can work at home. I spend about 90% of my day in this room.
My other daily runner is in my kitchen and keeps the room cool when I'm running the oven, it also keeps the smoke alarm from going off every 5 minutes when I use the stove. aside from the Fasco this is my favorite fan
It's just so beautiful in every way I think I'm hooked onf Vortalex fans for life.

I have butt-ugly, but sound 77646 (ivory) that runs in my fan shop/dog quarters from April through November. I have a 12" Hunter C12, a 77646 pedestal, a RotoBeam and a S4 Century that run at my office every day, all day and just rotate through the collection for home use, mostly 77646 pedestals & a 6-wing Westinghouse BB/BC that Halderman hung me for years ago. Just got a 12" Silver Swan pedestal from Schnellbacher in May up at Pig Pickin' that's an up & coming contender for ruling the roost. As for "new" stuff....the Air Shadow (Fanimation) over my bed is just a dream to sleep with and a lotta' fun to watch "engage"! See you guys around the fan tables next week at FF08/Memphis.
