Ok....ok,
So perhaps I got a little off track on my Emailed Lasko re: c1950s Box Fan: Lasko Strongly Advises: Unsafe?!? thread. (Please see post #s: 36, 45, 46, 47, and 48 ) when we started the topic of old black and white movies where we spotted cool antique oscillating fans and in what TV shows where we spotted collectible fans.
So, I've started a new forum topic: In what movie or TV show did you spot a collectible fan?
Best regards,
Lisa

Lisa, you practically had me on the floor with The Maltese Oscillator! I can picture Sydney Greenstreet chipping away at the base of a fan (instead of the falcon) with his pocket knife! ROFLMAO! How about Vornado instead of Vertigo? And what if Casablanca had been about the ceiling fan?!
Seriously, though, for some reason, I can't recall if I had seen fans in any of the versions of The Maltese Falcon (there were two versions of this film before the 1941 version with Bogart, Lorre, Greenstreet, and Astor). I've only seen them 100 times! I guess I get so involved in the story, because it's a great one. Sydney Greenstreet and Peter Lorre together are an unbeatable duo.
One movie with a fan that does come to mind offhand is 12 Angry Men. In one scene, Jack Warden throws a crumpled piece of paper at the Emerson wall fan, and the movement of the blades directs it onto Joseph Sweeney's head, after which he exclaims, "That was a dang stupid thing to do."
Gumshoe and film noir movies do often have fans in them. Usually, there will be a dimly lit, dingy office, or one with starkly contrasting light and dark areas, and it will be furnished with very spartan furniture, and there will be a desk fan or wall fan with slowly moving blades. Oh, and let's not forget about the obligatory flashing neon sign visible through the window!
I can recall a few Twilight Zone episodes that have fans in them.

OMG! We wouldn't want to see him knife chipping away at a lovely antique Oscillator! Why that fan desecrator! Darn it -- Sydney is ruining the finish of the cast iron MALTESE OSCILLATOR. Another restoration project.....hee - hee!
I'll bet there were fans in Titanic somewhere -- like ceiling fans. I'll have to watch it again.
Bill you had me ROFLMAO with the creative movie concept changes to Vornado (Vertigo) and Casablanca (the ceiling fan).
hee....hee

Top Gun springs to mind.
Lots of Emerson 79 series fans (I'd imagine that these are 79648-AP-G's, the government issue Emmy's) which are wall-mounted, plus a few Hunters as well. You also see a couple of mid-80's Galaxy (made by Lasko) fans and more than a few ceiling fans.
The fans are the only things that made the movie bearable to me.
Another movie is "Angel Heart". This is a bit of a dark movie, but you see a good close up of a 30's vintage Diehl double ceiling oscillator (two fans arranged like a gyrofan, but it's not a gyro and the fans oscillate), a window fan (maybe a Lasko) and I think a Freshen'd Air.

There are LOTS of fans in movies. Here are a few that come to mind:
Bridge on the River Kwai
The Great Gatsby
Forrest Gump
Fried Green Tomatoes
Avalon
There are many, many more, but those were the first I though of, and each of those had several fans. There was a Victor Luminaire (funeral parlor fan) in a more recent movie, but I can't remember at this time which one.
Also, if any of you are familiar with the British singer Kate Bush, in one of her videos, Donald Sutherland plays her father and there's a scene where he switches on what appears to be a Westinghouse Tank.

Gone With The Wind
ok... So there weren't any collectible fans in the movie Gone With the Wind; although, the title seems to imply a powerful antique fan perhaps, maybe?!?

There is a movie starring Bette Davis called 'The Letter' that takes place in Malaysia in the 30's.
There is a court scene toward the end where there are like 8-10 ceiling fans and another 8-10 table and wall mounted fans all in a single scene. It almost gives makes you dizzy with all that rotational movement going on.

Yes! I nearly forgot about that one! That's the one set in a rubber plantation in Singapore. Good movie.
LOL @ Lisa's Gone With the Wind remark.
I'm familiar with the movies Dave mentioned. Dave's Groucho Marx avatar is causing me to try to recall if I'd seen any fans in Marx Brothers movies.

| I always remembered an old Edward G. Robinson gangster movie from the '30s--I think maybe it was called "Scarface" and his character was named Rico. At any rate, there was some movie where he was a gangster and in one scene he was sitting in a bathtub with a fan very prominently aimed at him. I saw this when I was a kid before I got into fans, so I don't know what make it was--but I think this must've been my first awareness of old fans, because it's the only thing about the movie I remembered! (I think I was also worried that the fan would fall in the tub and electrocute him, before the G-Men got a chance to gun him down!)

Oops, I just googled it, and the movie with E.G. Robinson as Rico was called "Little Caesar"! But I'm pretty sure that was the one with the fan! ("Scarface" starred Paul Muni.)

You just reminded me of another film with Robinson: Key Largo (1948), which also features Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, and Lionel Barrymore. Robinson is in a bathtub for part of this movie, too, and you don't see him much till later in the movie. I can't recall if there's a fan in the bathroom with him or not (although I think there is), but I believe there are some in other scenes. This movie is set in Key Largo in the summer -- it would be nearly impossible to survive without a fan in those conditions.

No pictures?? Come on people!
Here are some. These are all very recent movies - the first three are from Transformers, the two after that are from Hairspray (remake), the one after that is from La Vie En Rose (French of course) and the last is from some documentary but I don't remember what. (not about GE though!)
Giant Mobilaire?

Westy Cat. 321347 MB-SC

closeup!

green Electrohome

another electrohome?

unknown pedestal...... Westinghouse?

steel-bladed GE (there are two!)

Love the Pix! Neato. Definitely, I like that cute Green Electrohome fan where Tracy's Mom (John Travolta in drag) is ironing from the Hairspray Movie. It is so cheerful and happy looking. Where do I get me one of them thayre Green Electrohome fans? Secondary question would be: and how much would one of those set me back? Guess I like the colorful fans!

Anyone know if there was there a fan in the movie Atonement? It seems to me like there was an antique fan in one of the scenes in the manor house when there was stiffling heat and while the blond young girl is going back and forth typing her dramas and spying on her older sister. Like maybe a fan in the scene where the mother was lying down with a migraine? Geez, I can't remember...Its been awhile since I saw that movie in the theatre.

Thank You!! I've been waiting forever to find out what that pedestal was... it's kind of ironic in context though, because despite the movie being French/Italian, the particular scene that the fan appears in is set in New York City. What the...??

John Travolta looks a lot like my sister in that Hairspray pic! Except I don't think she ever irons. I don't either--I guess that's why my name isn't "Jeremy Irons"!
I remember a few years ago on eBay somebody was selling a fan (Vortalex I think, but not sure) that supposedly appeared in the original Andy Griffith Show. It was from some big prop house. I think it came with some sort of certification of authenticity. I loved that show.

Every time I see that movie, I get so caught up in the story (despite having seen it dozens of times) that I forget to look out for fans. I know there are some, I just forget to examine them. Does Rick (Bogart's character) have one in his office? I can't recall. A scene to pay attention to (besides those featuring Rick's Café Américain, obviously) is the one that features Ferrari's (Greenstreet's character's) place.

I still watch that show when I catch it. It's a classic (except in its late years, when Don Knotts is no longer there). Do you recall if Drucker's store in Petticoat Junction and Green Acres has a fan? Shoot, I don't remember!

LOL...who could forget ol' Arnold?! That pig has more brains than everyone else combined on Green Acres.
Right now I'm watching a 1930s James Cagney gangster flick. I've caught a few fleeting glimpses of fans in offices in this movie, but none long and clear enough that I could make out specifics.
Next comes Confessions of a Nazi Spy, with E. G. Robinson. I've seen this before, but many years ago. The station is TCM, of course!

Once upon a time not to long ago...I turned on the boob tube and flipped through the channels. I came upon a low budget flick with some dudes on crotch rockets that stopped in at a diner. I feel confident this was a 2003-2004 flick. As they walked into the diner guess what I spotted? A Zephyr pedestal in the shadows that sure looked like what Andy Hackman stands beside in the AFCA museum gallery. The only low grade crotch rocket flick I was able to find on the web of that time period goes by the name of "Torque". I flipped the channels shortly after viewing the fan because the flick ..... . So...I don't know for sure if that is the correct movie...but...I know the pedestal I saw was..... a Zephyr. Based off of web photos in the movie "Torque", it has old diners in the background. One went by the name of Earl's Blue Plate Diner. Maybe one of you younger fan dudes can nail it. Last edited on Fri Jul 25th, 2008 05:33 am by Russ Huber

Apollo 13(the movie with Tom Hanks)I remembered seeing a Freshy in one of the shots.
The police show Barney Miller:it was very hot that day and one of the guys had picked up a brass fan for the preceit(sp). The fan needed help badly as it was turning about 1RPM.At the shows end someone grabbed a beast like a Vortalex and replaced it,blowing the office into meyhem.I was about 7 years old at the time so my memory has slipped the details....

There was a Charlie Chaplin movie, might have been 'The Floorwalker', where he is in a department store, and in one of the chase scenes, he runs past a brass bladed fan (I think it might have been a 16" R&M) then turns around and uses the fan to ward off the people who were chasing him.
There are also brass bladed fans featured prominently in some of the Indiana Jones movies.
And there's a scene in one of 'The Munsters' TV episodes where Lily (the mother) walks up to a window, and sitting on a table right below the window is an S.A. Xippas bank teller fan.

I know I saw fans in the third one (w/Sean Connery), you see Indy sitting in front of what looks to be a 16" GE loop handle and in the father's house you see an early Quiet Blade stationary desk fan and a QB Oscillating fan (pedestal).
In the first movie, there are lots of ceiling fans to be seen in the scenes where they're in Cairo.

OK Lisa.....since you appear to be destined to be a FanAddict like the rest of us and you have the Italian heritage, I suggest that you start your collection of Marelli fans....great design, integrity and function.
Hi Will, Cute doggies!
Took your suggestion and discovered from ebay that quite unintentionally, I already own a Marelli. Its in the engine compartment of my Saab...the auxilliary fan. I wonder why Marelli fans are molto expensivo? Also wonder if they require a voltage converter?
On ebay there's one with a buy it now price of $300:

and one which doesn't operate with a starting bid of close to $40.

At present, I am unable to think of anymore movies or TV shows with vintage fans. So far, there have been lots of neat cinematic contributions to the thread. Perhaps I require more cafe? All this "parlo Italiano di Marelli" makes me want espresso.
Lisa (who is logging off right now in order to use la Guzzini machina d'espresso!)

Marellis aren't really that expensive....until you put it into a SAAB....then, it gets expensive, because the valve stem caps on SAABs are expensive, because......they're SAAB. Anybody know if SAAB is an acronym? I could make one up! Great fans, great cars , great coffee....party on.

Being an automotive historian, I can declare with certainty that SAAB stands for Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget (the last word is often abbreviated as AB). The company was founded to make military aircraft in the late 1930s.

A-HA! So that's why they're always talking about jets in their commercials! Thanks for the Saab story, Bill.
Speaking of aviation, I think I made a couple of brief fan sightings in the movie about Howard Hughes called The Aviator. I thought it was a great movie and bought the DVD after I saw it at the theatre, but haven't watched it again yet. I'll have to see if I can identify them!
