| Some new and interesting facts about my steel bladed vorty have surfaced! I took it off the shelf tonight, so i can finally restore it. I noticed the motor is stamped right behind the tag GE-9-?? I cant remember the last 2 digits, knew i shoulda wrote it down. So MAYBE this is some sort of expermental fan... who knows... BTW the form number is AS1.. is that a QB form number? | Jay, Form AS is for 1936-37 fans including the AOU and probably many other GE fans. Being as how your fan is probably from those years and a year or so before the Vortalex was introduced in 1938 it could be a prototype. But were there other steel blade Vortys later and after the 4 blade Vorty 12" was introduced in 1940- I think that I have heard of some. I wonder why GE would have a steel 4 blade Vorty blade when, at the time of your fan, they were using three aluminum blades and then went to four aluminum blades. If a prototype I think any scenario would work. Do you have any other info on your unique fan?

| I wanna say Russ huber? found one of these same fans, but passed on it. I dont have any info on it, I bought it on ebay about 3 years ago. Some have suggested the blade was a factory replacement part, but first question is why would the replacement be steel? not to mention, there is no center vortalex button, nor do i think there ever was one. the hub looks like it had been welded on the rear for balance purposes, and it appears to be factory. the fan runs smooth as silk too! As for the 3 blade vs 4 blade, your guess is a good as mine, as the first 12" vorty's as you said were 3 wingers. Last edited on Tue Jan 27th, 2009 05:59 am by Jay Bernard

| Any chance that this is a QB fan with a replacement Vorty blade ?? The last of the QB fans had a cage similar to that used on the 3 & 4 wing 12" vorty's. This sure looks like a cage from a quiet blade fan. ???

Yup. There is one ALL BLACK sitting with a dealer in Kasson Minnesota. However...I remember that one with the later badge. Someone else here posted one other than Jay...just like Jays I think? I think it was either Andrew Goold or block? I could be way wrong on that one. So far that makes three steel blade vortys I am aware of. The one I saw in Kasson had the bakelite blade hub insert. I bet the the dealer may still have it. He has been trying to dump it for three or four years.
There is no concrete reasoning for the use of steel on these blades yet. Especially when they are so far and few between.

| All of the Vortys I have redone on the USS TEXAS are steel bladed. It seems the navy may have spec'd steel blades vs aluminum for the ship fans as nearly all of the fans on board are steel bladed.

This is my Vorty for sale in NW Florida.
I ship at your expense.

I was told by another site that 1940 vortys came with black steel blades, although rare. I'm assuming mine is a military model due to a riveted on brass tag with numbers that don't belong. It just looks like a military tag to me.

Steve, the facts are you're selling a black Vorty with steel blade?,....and a brass tag with numbers on it. The rest as you yourself stated we can only...assume. Good luck on your sale.
