Dear New Friends at AFCA:

I am rewiring a Westinghouse 12-FL-3 and cannot figure out how to get into the motor housing to attach new wire to the windings for the head cable.  Suggestions?

Thanks,
Newbie Bill in Vermont

I would repair the wiring without removing the the motor. That is stamped steel and there is a very good chance that you will bend or damage the housing if you attempt to remove the motor. I can be done, but you have been warned.

You will probably chip the paint a little just getting the front off but you shoudl be able to see the line in the center section towards the front where the 2 halves come together. A sharp chisel coudl probably do it. However as already mentioned - removing the the stator from the housing on these is the bane of fan collectors. You just about need to fabricate a puller to get one out without damaging or bending the housing.

OK, I get it.  I won't try to open the housing.

The two conductors coming out of the motor housing are actually flexible and in good shape.  The cotton covering is nearly gone but there is a good piece of it down lower on the head cable.  I can slide it up and feed a little through the grommet and then cut the conductors and strip the ends for joining to repro. black, twisted. cotton covered Sundial wire with two butt splices.  I can then cover the butt splices with new, fresh cotton sheathing.

Anyway, this is my new theoretical plan.

Thanks for the replies,
Bill

I have gotten some wire covers from McMaster and they look really good. You would not have to replace the wire just cover it.   Dave
