| I am working on building a working stock of fan restoration materials so I don't have to wait on basic materials for each project. I am curious what the most commonly needed oil wick diameters and fiber washer sizes are if you are working on mostly pre-1950 Emerson and GE fans. Thanks!

Alison,
This is the oil wick that matches most old sizes, from McMaster Carr, Felt Cord, White , 3/16" Diameter. ($1.07 p/ft)
http://www.mcmaster.com/#felt-wicking/=2k6ad6
You may want these gromets, also from McMaster Carr, Push-in Grommet, 5/16"id,11/16"od, 1/4" Thk For 1/2" Dia Panel Hole.
Most old GE's will use a 3/8" ID diameter fiber washer

| ....and it's always good to buy bulk-stock shrink-wrap for soldered joints in wiring...I buy mine by the 36" length locally down here on the bayou for cheap (at an electronics supply house)....that is if you're a shrink-wrap kinda' collector and not old school with friction tape.

| I haven't been able to find a good local supplier for shrink tube. I bought an overpriced assortment pack at radio shack.

Thanks for the help putting my first supply order together :) Ralph if you have a French Gerleman or Philips Electric nearby give them a try. We have had good luck finding heat shrink tubing of various diameters in 3ft sticks from these two supply houses. I am in a small town and we have both so they might be fairly common.

Great info! Thanks everyone. I am still looking for the insulating varnish, I have the spray clear and red but would like to find the non-spray can of penetrating varnish and also a black one. Any hints on where to find these?
Thanks Brad.

Dolph's online has it I believe. But I'd check around at GOOD electronic stores (NOT Radio shack) first.

| To find varnish, I drove around to 8 different places with no luck. Then I opened the phone book and looked under Electric Motor Repair. Four calls later, I found it. Here's a tip. When you call, if they dont sell it, ask them to recommend another shop that might carry it.

You can buy Insulating Varnish http://www.McMaster.com page 833 or search for Electrical Insulating Varnish. They have 3 colors Clear, Red and Green. The Green is for harsh environments and is oil resistant. They work well for me.
