I'm looking for another part guy's, I know, it's getting to be habit but, this one is to heavy for me to fabricate with the tools I have. I'm looking for a cage clip for an R&M 1404 Tank. It's pictured below and measures just slightly over an inch long and about 3/8" wide and about 1/8" thick. If ya got one I got the cash, just let me know via email, phone or PM. Thanks again guy's

If anyone is wondering, this is for a fan in MY collection and I have NO intention of selling it. So, if anyone has a spare clip I need I would greatly appreciate it and am more then willing to pay you what ever you want for it (within reason Kim).

Ron , you're lucky you just need the clip. I am still trying to find a complete strut, clip and screws for mine. I have had no luck either. I was hoping Geoff could find something , but so far she just has to be happy running with only three.

Ron
Maybe I need to be educated on this one but all the so called "tank" fans I have or have ever seen have the thin cage clip with the bend in it to accomodate the back cage ring. The clip you have posted looks more like a GE clip without the little nose piece on the bent end.

Charlie, Ron's fan came from me clipless on the one strut. It's an R&M design tank (at least that's what I call the fan), not the Westinghouse made and re-badged for R&M Westy tank. They all have those heavy clips and heavy stamped steel struts.

| Hi Ron - We have a box of clips similar to this for my barn sale. Don't know if this particular one is there, but I know there are some cast ones like your picture. Jeanne

| David - there are several boxes of sets of struts and individual struts in my barn sale. If you have a friend here who is coming, you could have them check for you. If that doesn't work, you can send me a picture of what you need after the sale, and I'll see if it is there. Jeanne

Steve,
Would that be the style that has the more oval shaped vent holes similar to a GE and a bit different yoke???.If so now I know which one you mean.

| Charlie, recognize the fan? These are the ones with the brass wingnut on one side to adjust pitch of motor. This is Ron's fan I sold him and for which he needs the missing clip on lower, left strut. Attached Image (viewed 246 times):

Do others call these 1404 motors "tanks" also or is it just I who uses that term?
These fans seem to be every bit as tanky and tough as the Westinghouse "tanks", maybe even a bit tougher? They came out in 1911 going by info in Kurt Houses' book (p.127). With the impending going away of the Westy tank (and those re-badged for R&M presumably) R&M came out with the new model 14 (1404 and 1411 16" version). I would say they were made through 1915 until the 1916 drawn steel models from R&M replaced that wonderful cast iron material. The first year 1404s used the lollipop cage (or visa versa) while the last year or so used an all brass cage with the later round R&M cage badge.
Neat fans even though they'll never win a beauty contest. I've ended up, after not even wanting one with four of 'em- one is a DC version. Hoping someone will have the clip for Ron before he gets on top of the weather. Hey Ron, get better. Quite smoking, start running, quit breathing paint fumes, smell the leaves and flowers, eat some mint chocolate chip ice cream. Whatever it takes to get well.Last edited on Sun Sep 20th, 2009 06:27 am by Steve Stephens

I totally agree, Steve. The R&M-made tank has it's own special look. I really love the style of the trunnion, so wide and beefy. The motor, though slightly smaller that the Westinghouse version, is still large. I have always called these "tanks". They are really well made and even more reliable, as the motor lacks the starting switch. Mine has the lollipop cage as shown me by Ron Jeter. Randy has one with an open style cage too, but his cage is very narrow from the side. But his is definitely the R&M 1404 tank.
Photo is of mine with the lollipop cage.

Ron , Hope you get to feeling better soon too. I know what you mean about replacement parts for us. I could use a new paint job and overhaul myself. If anyone does come across a complete strut for the R&M 1404 I would really appreciate it . Would the Westy tank strut work if all else fails ? The old fan runs okay with 3 , but it just ain't right :-)

My guess Fred is that Randy's cage may have come from a Westy R&M tank. Or did the very first 1404s use the older Westy R&M tank cage? I've measured several original looking 1404s and the cage is deeper than the older Westy R&M but, other than the depth, the same construction. The feathervane cage is even deeper than the lollipop/1404 cage.
David, Westy tank (and Westy R&M tank) struts are cast and I don't think would work on a 1404. Completely different motor and maker and material. 1404 struts are fashioned out of steel strap and could probably be made with some effort as they are pretty hefty.Last edited on Sun Sep 20th, 2009 07:27 pm by Steve Stephens

| Ron, why do you think I sold you that fan? I looked intensively for 8 years for a clip with no luck. I guess R&M didn't make any spare parts. Just kidding but would recommend that you post another photo or two from a different angle (side, etc.) so people may better see what you need. These fans aren't rare but where are the spare/parts fans and clips. I'm amazed. Maybe people just don't think of these ugly (sort of) ducklings much. Wish you luck; I know you'll find one in under 9 years.

Well Steve, I really hoped I'd find an original clip but, it's beginning to look like I'm going to have to make one. I mean it's not a hard process but, I'm no tool maker either. Who knows, maybe I'll surprise myself and be able make a few extras for others who haven't got them.

Original is always the best. But...when one doesn't pop up.....a chunk of soft metal like brass, a small grinder, a drill, some small specialty files, a skilled hand, and some this and thats.
