Hi, I am after a Cage for this Marelli Fan to avoid a gruesome injury when its in full swing.

It doesn’t have to be in perfect nick as the fan itself is a bit on the rustic side. I plan to mount a restoration project at some point but safety first.

There's good news and there's bad news I'm afraid. Your Marelli is a nice fan and an early example. That's the good news.

The bad news is that the early Marellis had a particular cage design where the "S" wires were wrapped around the rear ring and the middle open front ring. The wrapped parts of these wires were chamfered to about half their diameter to make the wrapped part less prominent.

Unfortunately the reduced wire thickness meant that the cages are more inclined to disintegrate. I know because I have several early Marellis 'sans' cage for that reason (I have been looking one for Geoff Dunaway for some time as I owe him a return favour).
Later on Marelli built a much more robust cage with tubular rings which enclosed the "S" wires. These are atomic bomb proof but are (a) wrong for your fan and (b) the wrong size as well. I have even seen one of these later robust cages turned totally inside out and have successfully reversed the reversal without breaking the joints!

Your best bet is to have someone build one for you.

Thanks, is this the type of cage I would have to look for?

No Patrick. This the later atomic bomb proof cage. Strictly not correct for your fan but acceptable in the lack of the correct one perhaps?

I am in Schipol at the moment but will be home on the 16th. We can chat by email after that date

Warm regards

Peter

I have a similar vintage collar oscillator version of the fan shown below. As far as I know the cage shown is the correct one for the model. This is also a 12" fan and if you look close you will see they even have the exact same motor vent holes, switch, etc. I think the only difference is this one is an oscillator, obviously in sore need of restoration. As already said though - any cage would be better than none.

Closeup of the cage itself from mine.... it's a 9 wire cage and the wires fully wrap around the back ring. If you need some detail photos of where the wires meet the ring, back of the center ring, etc. let me know.

Patrick,

I think the cage that takes this model is similar to what Richard has.
The Marelli, with cages fragile, they differ in the shape of the base, the porosity of iron, and painting.

If you are interested in obtaining a cage original check a message (PM) that I sent you.

Regards.

Hey Patrick....im sure with a little info from Richard i could build you a real nice guard for your fan...will just need some dimensions on the rod, center ring, outer ring and others...send me an email if you are ready to get one made....
