It's a 2 speed, model Y 2001. Probably made in the early 1960s. Not very often a base 2 speed model came with a venturi ring- This is a quality fan. Fasco made great box fans!
That is in fantastic condition for a curbside fan.
Yes, you would have never known the fan was so clean. It was so covered with dirt that it never had a chance to rust. I need to push out the dent on top and get a correct handle on it.
The fan had a bad, frayed cord on it. It's about the 5th fan I've found thrown out because of a bad cord. An easy fix, but I guess not worth the effort for some folks.

So I have a twin Freshy with 3 speeds and thermostat control, the Mathes, and the Philco window fan. The Philco is in pretty good shape.

That Mathes is more like the ones I have seen. Your Freshy is pretty nice. Is it "Freshn'd Aire" by Cory? They started having that in the name at some point- I don't know when.
That Philco- How big is it? The blade? I have seen that fan in pictures, but never seen the blade.

The freshy is "by Cory".... The Philco - here's a photo looking inside the back door of it with the air filter removed. It has an Emerson motor in there with shafts out both ends and squirrel cage blades on each end. It has a couple of sets of internal doors that can be opened and closed which is the crossbar you see. It's not very large - it's 17" wide x 11" high x 14" deep. The squared rear part with the door is what you put sticking out the window.

That Philco fan looks an awful lot like my Philco radio from the 1940s. I assume the fan is a 1940s model? Very cool (pun intended).

Ooh, you must've had some unwanted critters pass through there, unless the snakeskin was already there when you got the fan.

The skin was there before it even left the ceiling... that's the spooky part......

Check out these two from Ebay:
This one is interesting, but I don't like that the motor is mounted directly to the rear grille, like the Toastmaster I just won on Ebay. It's a real pain to disassemble for cleaning. I didn't realize there were as many intermediate-sized box fans as there are (between the standard small 12-or-so inch and large 20-or-so inch fans). My Vornado is one such fan.

Does this one below have the original blade? I tend to doubt it.

That Eskimo does not have the correct blade. That model typically came with a thin, four blade design that was identical to what they put on their 10-12 in. table fans.
I have seen a few fans, listed as vintage, with new blade sets. Another common thing is to take a newer Lakewood P25 blade and put it on an old 20" fan. The blade set was available from Lakewood, through distributors, until the fan was discontinued. It sold for approx. $20. There have been a few on ebay that had a casing and motor mount that lloked familiar, but with the blade, I could not tell what they were.
If you are just buying a fan for the sake of having one, it does not matter. If you are buying something "vintage", I think it's a bit of sham to advertise as such something that clearly is not close to original.
Just my opinion.

Here's my little 12" Signal from the mid 50's.
It has an air diffuser, electrically reversible two speed motor (6-pole), and a thermostat. Very feature packed for a smaller fan, and due to the deep pitched blades it's very quiet.

Nick,
That is the first Fasco 20" 4 blade that I have ever seen. I saw you video (I think it's yours) on You Tube. That's an awesome fan.
It is listed in the Fasco 1971 catalog as "Designer series"

I found this scan from a 1971 Fasco Brochure that has your fan. The scan was on an old computer and the quality is poor- but hey, it does give some info on the fan.

Emersons are great- but I do not think they made many box fans. I think they only produced box fans into the late 1960s, and never in high quantity. Of the major desk fan producers, GE, Fasco and Hunter made far more box fans than Emerson. Just guessing, mainly from memory, knowledge of what companies sold fans in what major stores and what I have seen on ebay, I'd say the major box fan companies were: Lakewood, Lasko (especially later), Eskimo-Toastmaster (all made by Bersted Mfg.), Hunter, Air King and Fasco. Lakewood, Air King and Lasko primarily made box and window fans, only later did they start producing table fans.
I'll look for a Westy. I have a picture somewhere...

Thanks for the Eskimo picture, Don. That's what I thought the blades should look like. Perhaps the seller didn't know.
That green Emerson is really neat! Do you have a friend whose collection you can photograph? I ask this because you posted the Emerson and also the G.E. I've been looking for, none of which are yours. Ray will sell me his G.E. 12-incher, incidentally. Finally, after all these years, I'll have one!

I have to be careful, as I have a ton of photos that I have "poached" from ads thru time and probably would be violating some copyright if I post them. Except for those two, all of the other fans I have shown are in my collection, and with the exception of a few table fans, have shown all I currently own.
I have about 600 different box and window fan photos. I have considered compiling a history of the major brands, as I have seen enough to have a good idea of what and when most were made. I'd love to get all of the input others have on these fans and see how much we all know and have to share.
That's good news about you finding the 12" GE!
