Hello,
I picked up a 10" Western Auto Supply "Wizard" fan at a flea market for $5. Model: BE2002A-96. The thing works great. Single speed, stationary, no switch. Spins up smooth, blows a ton of air. Not the quietest thing in the world. Upon spin down, there are occasional rattles, I'm thinking the cage just needs to be tightened. The essence of simplicity. I figured it should be a pretty easy one to do. Any one ever heard of this company?

| That fan is made by the Bersted company. They are quite common. These were the cheap fans in their time but they have proved their quality since many have survived to see 2009. I have two 8" models. Both run excellent.

| I'll bet that the rattle mentioned is a loose cage badge which can be remedied by pinching the tabs a little more or use of hot glue.

I found out what the rattle is. Part of the cage has come disconnected and rattles occasionally. Once it reaches running speed it's fine.
It's hot today, so this fan has been put into immediate service. It moves a good amount of air, however, the fan motor seems noisy. Maybe that's how these are, but it sure is a lot noisier than my antique R&M.
I haven't opened it up yet to look inside, but I'm thinking it could definitely use some oil. It has an oil hole in the back of the bullet back motor. What kind of oil should I use for this?

You can use Zoom Spout or Blue Can 3-in-1 oil.
One thing of note, you may want to pull the bullet to oil it. I have one of these (a little 8" stationary fan) that has an oil hole in the bullet that looks like it just drips oil on to the bearing, there's no tube or anything to convey the oil to where it needs to really go.
So yeah, these are cheap fans. The noisy motor yours has is kind of a result of that. However, these are better than anything made in China.

Western Auto and Firestone stores were two of a handfull of mainstreet auto supply stores in towns across the U.S. Not sure when they started operations, but I can recall seeing the stores in the 50's-80's. They sold auto parts, tires, oil,, etc. as well as small and major appliances. Wizard was one of their appliance brand names along with Western Flyer (bicycles), Truetone (radios), Wearever (oil) and probably a lot more that I have forgotten. I feel most, if not all of their products were produced and privately labeled by various OEM suppliers.

| I've got one that looks just like yours but it is an 8". It is very loud, so I don't use it, but they are good air movers. As others said cheap fans, but they aren't bad quality.

WIZARD was Western Auto's house brand name.
sort of like Kenmore was Sears's house brand.
Made by other companies and Western Auto put the name WIZARD on them.
fans, lawn mowers bicycles etc.
And yes they weren't the top of the line of stuff.

| Just so you know, there is also a oil port in the front of the motor to. It is in the center just above the shaft. I dosent say "oil", but it is an oil port that connects directly to the wicking.

| Yes I have heard of this- It's considered low quality and made by Bersted MFG, BUT they are still MUCH better quality than today's plactic 'fans'. I have 4 that still run excellent- once you oil it it'll be very quiet, after I oiled mine, the only sound I heard was the wind being pushed through. I wish I could say the same for mine. After oiling it, it still isn't very quiet. I'm not really sure what to do with it. I've taken it apart and oiled it, and it still seems like there's some resistance inside.

Hey Luke,
It is a wizard. You mentioning Zero reminds me- there is an antiques shop with a Zero in it close by. But I wasn't really interested.

| Yeah, our antique store here in bartlett is constantely getting new fans in- I buy them almost every time. They also have some rare ones. so far they have two fans in boxes somewhere and when they find them, they'll call me and i'll go pick the fans up, but It always depends if they're worth the price. Do you know if the Zero works at the store?

Hello,
As I remember, the zero was in kinda rough shape. I seem to remember it missing something- I think it was one of the parts of the mount or something, not sure. I never plugged it in. There is another fan at a different antiques shop that I liked- a 16" single speed oscillator that ran real nice, but I don't remember the name. They were asking something like $30-35 for it. I'll check it out the next time I'm in. In the meantime, I want to finish up the R&M.

Hey Luke,
It didn't have brass blades, they were painted a dark blue or green as I remember. It had a bullet shaped cap on the center of the blade. I'll have to check it out, now I'm getting curious again.

I'm pretty sure that's it. It sounds familiar. I seem to remember the stacked A's. I'm going there this morning to pay more on my layaway on an 1800's dresser, so while I'm there, I'll check it out. Hope it's still there. I imagine it will be, stuff seems to be moving pretty slow these days.

Well it is an Arctic-Aire, and it's mine! $29.75 plus tax. I'll start another thread with more info later when I get home and can post a pic. Ran it again at the shop today and it runs nice and the paint's good- has the lovely green crinkle finish. Even has the metal stripe / banner on the bottom in good shape. Looks like it should need nothing more than the usual clean / lube.
Also got a Diehl junior for $15. That one's a little rougher. Has rust, and the blade REFUSES to come off..lol. I didn't try it at the shop because the power cord was beyond scary. Again, I'll start a separate thread for that with pics.

| that rattle on spin down and start up is very often the little colored center cap over the nut holding the blade on. the sound brings me back to my very first "zero" 8 inch fan in the 60's ticka ticka ticka.....tom
