Does this look right? I only have one spring installed currently, I wanted to see when you guys thought of the tension before I installed the other two. I followed what Russ told me, I hope I cut them right.

Cut the spring about 13/16". Then carefully with a razor blade(whatever)separate and bend out a loop on each end. once the loop is standing out, snip the end of the loop leaving enough loop to have secure hold to its connection. Good Luck.

Do you know another way of telling me that measurement? I'm not sure how to figure out 13/16

And I thought I was the only one. :D  On a standard household ruler or tape measure...1/16" is the smallest mark inside the inch.  Just count carefully 13 of those small marks inside one inch ...and you have it.  If your still confused..to check yourself...it would take 16 of those spaces to make one inch.

Russ,

Should I start counting at the hoop in the end of the spring or when the actual coil begins?

Adam, in the future, it may be a good idea to draw diagrams and take pictures of things before you take them apart. And most important...don't chuck stuff until your done with the finished product....especially...springs. The measurement I gave you is from a original tank motor centrifugal sping I had laying around. The others I have are in the fans. Hard to get at them there. :tumbs

I am sorry Adam. Hopefully someone has the correct length of YOUR missing springs.

Adam,

Another way to look at it is the spring should be just slightly stretched when the switch lever is the starting position. I think this may be a better approach than trying to make the spring be a measured length. I'm not sure if all the switches are identical, so a custom fit may work best. The experts will straighten me out if I'm wrong.

yeah, that was my bad..I took pics just not of that unfortantly. I have the same switch pretty much as you do in the pic (just smaller) However my weights aren't pulled in like yours are so do you recommend I cut them shorter to pull that weight in more?

13/16" should be 1/16" MORE than 3/4".........3/4" is 12/16"..............start at the 1" mark and count up 13 marks.......

Cheers from Dallas,Tx

Actually, the springs on the tank centrifugal of MINE were cut to length of one of my good originals. But...Ralph is on target Adam. There is no need for tablets full of calculations and equations to get past this one. :D

hard to tell from the photo, kinda out of focus. this is what the spring should look like in the "in" position.

Ralph,

Are the springs suppose to snap back into the in position if you pull the weights back?

They should snap back and have a light pressure against the contact ring that goes inside the arms. When you start the fan on high the weights should move outward fairly soon. You'll hear them stop rubbing and clicking on the center contact. When you turn the fan off the contact arms should move inward when the fan gets to, maybe, half speed or so.

Steve,

Is this what you mean? It looks like the pic that Ralph posted. Messing with those small springs aren't as easy as they look. hehe

Adam, looks about right. As long as the levers are returning to the correct position it should work fine. You can tell when you test it, you should be able to hear the switch stop making sounds as the fan speeds up. Usually just a few seconds after starting.

Ralph,

How did you get your springs bent like that? I've tried during it several times and can't and I'm getting frustrated especially now that I know that it runs I want to try to get this fan done.

I got mine at a local fleamarket. I just looked on ebay, there are loads of them for sale quite cheap. I use mine almost every day.
