On return from the UK fan meet I bought two fans (I will post pictures of a rather nice Veritys Light 12" non-oscillator in "October finds").

In the Cairo junk shop, hiding under a table, I saw this interesting early fan stump. At least I think it's a fan stump. Surely the hole in the top is of too large a diameter to support just a reflector from a radiant heater?

There is no second hole for a head wire so presumably it was routed through the shaft supporting the motor?

Stylistically it looks very early. It is seem to lie between a tripod and a tab foot being nearer to the tab foot but with very large feet.

Has anybody got a complete fan or perhaps has seen a picture in a catalogue?

Don't spare the details! How tall is it? Base diameter?

G'Day Pete.
I am pretty sure your stump is off an early "Calor" fan (French, late teens or very early 20's).
Unfortunately I don't have a photo of a complete fan,but I bet an AFCA member will have one!
Cheers Jim

I have that exact fan. I will get some photos of it complete. It is indeed French although I'm usure if it's related to Calor. Mine has Ventor on the cage badge.

The one Long posted does appear to be the same base but probably for a larger size with the longer neck. His also has a different motor, cage, and badge. Here are photos of the one I have. The base is cast iron but the motor is some sort of other cast metal either aluminum or pot metal. It's dirty and in severe need of a paint job. It did have factory gold pin striping on both the motor and base. I did not think to check the measurement before I left this morning but I think it's probably about a 9" blade on it. As far as I know it's totally original. When I got it there was no cord and I've never tried to put on on and test it as I'd like to totally refinish it and clean the bearings, check the brushes, etc. first. The bottom cover is the only indication of voltage showing 110-195. Also - while I've not pulled it apart I do agree that the wire to the head must go through the post.

Well yes, I guess you're right and I am 'stumping' again Will but I didn't manage to stump the AFCA guys did I?

Thank you Richard and Long for the pictures.

Richard you were sharp eyed to notice the difference in height of the castings between the Calor and the Ventor. I will go with your identification as a Ventor fan base.

After I wrote this, I checked out the French collector's  'Ventilo' website (see in the links)  and he indicates that 'Ventor' is a variety of Calor fan. This then explains why the bases are so similar.

As this is the first Ventor/Calor fan seen in 10 years collecting I will not hold my breath waiting for the remaining bits to turn up. It didn't cost anything so I will store it in a corner for anyone who drops their Ventor fan and needs a replacement base.

Yet again AFCA comes up trumps and demonstrates the reason it is such a great Forum for discussion. We learn something new each day.

Cheers guys
