I am having terrible luck with fans. I've acquired a beautiful Emerson 14646, nicely rebuilt, clean, brass cage and blades polished, coated and near perfect, very well packed for shipping. It ran great and I thought it would make a great fan for sleeping. But after three hours on low speed, there was a *pop* and it died. After my Emerson 24645 shipping disaster, this was crushing.

This was just last night, and I have not had time (or morale) to disassemble it and do any continuity testing. What I know is this: the fan ran smoothly on all speeds. On low after 3 hours running the back of the fan where the rotor shaft meets the rear motor case was barely warm to the touch, which seems reasonable. There is no binding or resistance to the blades turning. There was no smoke after the incident, but maybe a whiff of ozone, couldn't tell the source. The fan still starts and runs fine on medium and high speeds. It is totally dead on low speed.

I'm afraid of the possibility that a stator winding failed, as I think that situation will be beyond my capabilities, but after looking at John McComas' diagrams of other Emerson models I'm starting to suspect the speed coil. I know I need to do more homework.

Can anyone provide wiring information with ohms values for the Emerson 14646 or similarly wired model? I would very much appreciate any diagrams or troubleshooting advice.

Gary, When a stator goes it's gone so I doubt that's your problem, sounds like a wire may have just broke off the choke coil to the switch contacts. Open her up and check it out. BTW, I wouldn't run a vintage fan all night if you want to keep it running. It's lasted this long so who knows how much longer it'll last. Get ya a good late model Emerson from the 50's like 77646 that's got plenty of life left in her yet.

Thanks Ron! I hope you're right about the wire, makes sense to me.

And I think I'll take your advice about running the fan that much when I get her going again. A 77646 may be just the thing, especially with those wide quiet blades, and they seem to be fairly common. I'll keep an eye out for one. Thanks!

when Ron says something about rewiring and how to, he is rarely ever wrong and I can tell you there is no need for hope... LOL good luck, make sure you let us know what the results are.

Peter, I appreciate your confidence in me but, don't start think'en I'm perfect now. "Most of the time" is pretty Dad Burn perfect for me, maybe "half the time" is closer.  I've been known to make some pretty stupid mistakes in my time, in fact if you ask me when was the last time I'd have to look at my watch. Besides it's pretty hard to diagnose a lot of the fan troubles some come up against over the internet and without being there and seeing for me. But I will say "I think I'm right "most of the time". :hammer:

Update! My Emerson 14646 is fixed! And Ron, you were right on the money: a wire coming off the speed coil failed. A fellow AFCA member who sold me the fan actually was kind enough to do the repair work for me, saving me the risk of screwing it up with my inexperience. This was a really welcome boost in my fan-morale too. :)
