For your veiwing pleasure,a circa 1950 Vornado made in Canada. This is an interesting fan.First as you see the front cowl and guard is one piece moulded plastic.Second this is a 7 incher. The blades are 6 1/4 inches; about a 1/2 inch smaller the the American type. There is no oil ports for the motor. The colour is what I call Electalux green, like my grandmother's vaccuum. It has a high gloss finish.

The back view.Notice the switch? This is a variable speed fan. This thing will slow down to a crawl.Has any American company ever made a variable speed desk fan? It has a bullet shaped motor and a different style motor air inlet.

Vornado Jr.- B18C1-4 side by side with the Canadian version. The blades on the American type have a much deeper pitch.

Air movement? I am surprised that it is plastic.

Unique. I know box fans have had variable "infinite" speed controls but rarely would you see a desk fan with them. Vornado did make American models though in the 90's. I am sure there is an American desk fan out there with a variable speed control.

Those are really nice fans.  I'd be happy to get both of them as gifts.  Thanks for thinking of that idea.

Early Fresh'ND-Aire/Gaylord Electric fans had rheostats and transformers.

Yes, that Freshy cast pot metal bullet contains a rheostat, look at it like variable resistor. I am sorry Mike, when you mentioned "variable" speed control on the fan you posted, I thought the fan had a rheostat in it. I see now after a good look at the switch knob it is a three speed. Cool fan!

Psssst...I don't know if you spotted it Mike...I have a post to YOU dribbling down the forum. It is in regards to your Airmaster. :D

Yes Michael there have been variable speed desk fans.  2 variable speed desk fans, one Vornado and one Sears Kenmore. There was also a 10 inch version of the Kenmore.

Sorry I know they are not pre 1950, just answering his question.

As mentioned, there are some Sears Kenmore fans made by Knapp-Monarch that are variable speed. I just so happen to have the 10" version, here's a video of it - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1rgVViBqbn4

These are neat fans, you can slow them down to very low revs and they're silent. I don't necessarily like the base design, but this fan's run characteristics make this a hard one to not like using.
