Before I start taking the switch covers off my GE fans, can anyone tell me if the GE kidney shared the same switch/speed coil assembly with other fans? Maybe the BMY, SMY, or loophandle?

| I don't know Ron (how did your name get in there Ron? I was replying to Paul it looks like; sorry) but the Kidney is a big motor yoke at heart so the switch might be the same. Gosh Paul, I would think the thing to look for is do the number of headwires strands match....2 wire..3 wire...4 wire. Keeping Big motors and their switches together would probably be a good idea.
Example...swapping a speed choke from a small motor 16" Emerson to a big motor 16" Emerson results in a choke you can fry eggs on.  How do I know...I did it and that choke gets toasty. I'm not sure about mixing speed chokes on the big motor 12" and 16" G.E.s. The switches I would think to be the same either BMY or plain or loophandle kidney?

On the road for about a week and have been thinking about my next fan project. I figured some of our GE experts would know this question off the top of their head. I picked up a Hunter kidney some time back and the switch lever appears to be different. It has a ball on the top of the switch arm, not the standard black checkered pattern plastic cap as I expected, so assume the switch lever (at least) may have been changed out in the past. I have not removed the bottom plate yet to check it out, but will when I return home.
Like Steve and Russ, my initial thought is the BMY may share the same switch assembly. Good point on the speed coil Russ. Not looking to fry any eggs.

| My observations with the kidney are the laminations of the stator are thinner, maybe a quarter inch or so, that those of the 2nd and 3rd version BMY . Same goes for the rotor. Switch base is the same as a BMY except some Kidney bases have a threaded hole in the bottom side center...to hold the steel cover on. I have never seen a checkered pattern on any BMY lever tip, at least as original. Ring and Loop handle kidney switches appear identical. Nice score on a Hunter Kidney, now you'll need a FWEW kidney to keep it company.

Thanks Kim. I will take a look and see what I have when I return. If I am still scratching my head after I remove the switch cover, I will post some pictures. Guess I was thinking about the Emerson switch lever checkered pattern--it just has a ball on top of the switch lever instead of the black plastic insulated tip.
